12/31/2024: Late in the evening of December 30, 2024, a fire broke out in the Families Together emergency shelter apartment building on Polly Street in east Raleigh. The blaze spread quickly, forcing the families to evacuate with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Thanks to the quick action of one resident who alerted everyone else in the building about the fire, the 5 adults and 12 children staying in the shelter escaped unharmed. A resident’s emotional support cat is missing, and the team is making efforts to find him.

We are deeply grateful to the Raleigh Fire Department for their swift response in extinguishing the fire. The families are now temporarily housed in a local hotel. We also extend heartfelt thanks to the American Red Cross of North Carolina - Greater Triangle Area for providing immediate resources and support.

Our priority is meeting the urgent needs of these families. The Families Together team is actively providing hotels, meals and other essentials, as well as emotional support, during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

These families need your help now more than ever. Your generous donation helps provide emergency assistance to families directly impacted by the fire, supports post-fire recovery and rehabilitation efforts, makes resources available to provide shelter and support services for other families in need as we we navigate the loss of our Polly Street shelter.

Please give generously at https://familiestogethernc.org/generaldonation or to Families Together, PO Box 14395, Raleigh, NC 27620, with a note designating funds for “Fire Relief.”

We are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the fire and to assess the future of the damaged building, which is uninhabitable. We will share updates as more information becomes available.
